Empathy is at the heart of what it means to be human. It is the foundation for acting ethically, for good relationships in school and at work. It is the key to preventing bullying and other forms of cruelty.
Children learn empathy through parental and peer modeling. Giving and receiving empathy is one component of a healthy relationship. Empathy takes many forms from physical and emotional needs to respecting diversity and individual personalities. Parents need to demonstrate empathy by sending clear messages, practicing, nurturing, and reflecting.
Ricky, Hyperion’s friend, teaches him empathy and compassion by helping rescue Hyperion from the antics of the cat. Hyperion often wonders why he is programed to be human. Before long, he practices empathy with other characters throughout the series. (See Hyperion in action in Book 7, 8)
